Violin lessons in Bogotá, at home and online

The violin is demanding and deeply expressive: it has no frets, so each note's pitch depends on your ear and precise finger placement, while the bow shapes its tone. Lessons start with relaxed posture and healthy bow technique before adding speed or repertoire. Your teacher guides you step by step, at home in Bogotá and the surrounding area or by video call.

What you'll learn in violin lessons

  • Body posture, holding the violin and a tension-free bow hold.
  • Basic bow strokes such as détaché, legato and staccato, plus tone control.
  • Tuning by ear, scales and first position on the fingerboard, then position shifts.
  • Reading music in treble clef from the very first pieces.
  • Repertoire ranging from traditional melodies and classical methods to Colombian music, such as pasillos and bambucos, and popular music.
  • Tuning the instrument with pegs and fine tuners, and caring for the strings, bridge and bow hair.

When can you start?

From age 4

Violins come in fractional sizes (1/16, 1/10, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4), so children can start very young: in Suzuki-style approaches it's common to begin around age 4, with lots of play and family involvement. As a rough guide, between ages 5 and 7 most children find it easier to sustain attention and posture, although what really matters is each child's interest and maturity (more in what age to start studying music). Adults can start at any age and enjoy the process a lot, even if the sound takes patience at first.

What you need to get started

  • A violin in the right size for the player; your teacher helps measure for it before you get one.
  • A bow, rosin and, if needed, a pad or shoulder rest to support the violin.
  • A tuner (a tuner app works too) and a music stand.
  • For online lessons: a stable connection and a device with a camera that shows your bow arm and left hand from the side.

Why learn violin

  • Trains your ear to a high level of precision, because every note depends on how well you listen.

  • Develops fine coordination and independence between two hands doing very different jobs.

  • It's the gateway to orchestras, quartets and Colombian Andean music ensembles.

  • What you learn carries over if you're later drawn to a lower register, like the viola or the cello.

Questions about violin lessons

Can you learn violin in online lessons?

Yes, with a few precautions. The teacher needs a clear view of your posture and bow, so it's important to place the camera to the side, far enough away to show your body from the waist up. With very young children, it usually works better to start with in-home lessons, or to have an adult sit in on the online lesson.

Why does the violin sound so strange at first?

Because a good sound depends on the bow's weight, speed and contact point, and coordinating those three things takes time. The squeaks at the start are a normal part of the process, not a sign of lacking talent. Practicing open strings and slow bow exercises is the foundation for gradually refining your sound.

What size violin does my child need?

It depends on the length of their arm, not just their age. With the violin in playing position and the left arm extended, the child should be able to wrap their fingers comfortably around the scroll, with the elbow slightly bent. Your teacher can check this in the first lesson so the instrument doesn't cause tension.

How long should I practice violin at home?

Consistency matters more than quantity: short sessions most days get you further than one long one on the weekend. For a beginner, 15 to 30 focused minutes is a good starting point, and young children can start with less. Find ideas in how to practice music at home.

Which areas of Bogotá do the teachers cover?

We give in-home lessons in and around Bogotá. Coverage depends on the neighborhood and each teacher’s availability, so send us your approximate address and we’ll confirm.

Can I take lessons from another city or from outside the country?
