Violin lessons for kids in Bogotá and online

Violins come in fractional sizes, so a child can start young if the instrument fits and an adult helps with practice. The first few months focus on posture, bowing, and listening, and the sounds aren't always pretty. A violin teacher comes to your home in Bogotá and the surrounding area, or teaches by video call.

What lessons for kids are like

  • Violin size depends on arm length

Size depends on arm length, not just age. A 1/2-size violin usually fits a child aged 7 to 9, but the teacher checks with the instrument in hand. If your child is between sizes, choose the smaller one. Read more in how to choose your first violin and its size.

  • Posture, open strings, and bowing

At first, lessons focus on posture, bow hold and open strings. Don't expect songs in the first month. Good posture is an achievement too.

  • The ear comes before the fingers

There are no frets or keys: the note depends on finger placement. That's why children sing the melody before finding it on the violin. Many teachers use guide tapes on the fingerboard for the first few months, removing them as the ear takes over.

  • An adult at home, as in the Suzuki approach

A young child can't tune alone. Someone at home learns to use the tuner and fine tuners. Daily listening to the pieces and family participation in some lessons are useful ideas from the Suzuki approach, even if your teacher uses another method.

Your first month, lesson by lesson

  1. Lesson 1: the teacher measures your child's arm, checks the violin and teaches them how to hold and store it.
  2. Lesson 2: posture in front of a mirror and a relaxed bow hold, with games to loosen up the hand.
  3. Lesson 3: bowing open strings and singing a short rhythm before playing it.
  4. Lesson 4: a first simple melody, with an adult present to learn how to tune the violin and put the bow away.

What to expect to learn

  • Hold the violin and bow without tension in the neck, shoulder, or hand.
  • Simple bow strokes on open strings.
  • Finding finger positions by ear and with guide tapes.
  • Singing the melody before playing it.
  • Caring for the violin: loosening the bow, wiping off rosin and storing it properly.

Tips for parents

  • Don't buy an oversized violin for your child to grow into. It creates tension and makes playing in tune almost impossible. Ask the teacher to measure your child for the right size and check the instrument before you buy it. Renting or buying used is common, since children need different sizes as they grow.

  • Learn to tune with the tuner and fine tuners. Play recordings of the pieces your child is learning at home.

  • Practicing for 10 to 15 minutes with an adult nearby is more effective than an occasional long session. Always finish with something your child can already play.

Frequently asked questions

At what age can a child start learning violin?

Some children start at 4 with plenty of family involvement; others start at 7, 9 or later. What matters is that the violin fits, the child is interested and someone supports their practice.

When is it time to move up to a larger violin?

When your child's arm has grown enough that the current violin is too small. Ask the teacher to check the fit from time to time, especially after a growth spurt. It's best not to move up a size too soon.

Do online violin lessons work for kids?

Yes, with help. An adult should position the camera for the first few lessons, from the side and far enough away to show the bowing arm and left hand. With very young children, starting with in-home lessons may work better. See online music lessons and in-home lessons in Bogotá.

My child gets frustrated because it sounds bad. What should I do?

That's normal at first, because the sound depends on the bow's weight, speed and contact point. Celebrate small steps and keep sessions short. If frustration persists, talk to the teacher about adjusting the repertoire or pace.
