Percussion is music's rhythmic heart and includes much more than the drum kit: congas, bongos, cajón, timbales and Colombian drums such as the tambora, llamador and caja vallenata. Lessons develop a steady beat, coordination between hands and feet, and rhythms from rock and pop to salsa, cumbia and vallenato. You can focus on the drum kit or hand percussion, at home in Bogotá and the surrounding area or online.

Hi! My name is César, but my friends call me Cesitar ☺️✨ I firmly believe we all have rhythm inside us, even those who arrive saying, 'I'm no good at music.'

I'm JuanK, the spoon player: I listen, take things apart, understand them and help you translate your musical world.
From age 5
As a rough guide, children can explore hand percussion from age 5 with instruments sized for them, and drum kit usually starts around age 6 or 7, when they can reach the pedals and coordinate hands and feet better; junior-size kits are available. Every child progresses differently, and for the youngest, early music education is a great way in. Adults can start at any age, and playing rhythms together with other people is one of the most rewarding things there is.
Develops coordination and independence across all four limbs.
Sharpens your sense of time, a skill every musician you play with will value.
It's a very physical and freeing way to make music.
Connects you with the rhythmic richness of Colombian and Latin American music.
Lessons vary by age: the pace, the repertoire, and who helps with practice at home.
Start with a practice pad, hand percussion or a junior drum kit. The teacher takes care of the stool setup, hearing protection and noise at home.

It's not essential to start: you can begin with a practice pad and sticks to work on technique and rudiments, then add an acoustic or electronic kit later. If you're going to take drum lessons at home, it's best to have the instrument there.
Acoustic drums give you the real feel and sound, but they need space and are very loud. Electronic drums let you practice with headphones and control the volume, which is very practical in an apartment. Both work for learning; your teacher will advise you based on your space and your goals.
Depending on your interests, lessons can include hand percussion such as congas, bongos, cajón, timbales or guacharaca. This greatly expands your rhythmic vocabulary and helps even if your main goal is drum kit. Tell your teacher which styles and instruments interest you so they can shape the lesson plan.
Yes, especially for technique, rudiments, reading and coordination, using a pad or an electronic kit. With an acoustic kit the sound can overload the microphone, so it's best to move the device farther away or lower its input volume. If you're unsure, compare formats in in-home or online lessons.
