As a rough guide, children usually start trombone around age 9 or 10, because the arm has to reach sixth and seventh position on the slide, which are quite far from the body. While the arm is still growing, the teacher can adapt the repertoire to the first positions or suggest lighter instruments. Every child is different, and their height, permanent teeth and motivation are all taken into account. Adults can start at any age.

At first you rely on visual references, such as the bell, and above all on your ear. Your teacher shows you how to check with a tuner and adjust the position until the note sounds centered. With practice, your arm memorizes the distances.
Some trombones have a rotary valve, called an F attachment or trigger, that adds tubing and makes low notes and certain positions easier. You don't need one to start: a simple tenor trombone is enough. Later on, if you move toward orchestral or concert band repertoire, your teacher will tell you whether it's worth it.
Of course. The trombone is central to salsa, and many orchestras build their sound around the trombone section. In lessons you can work on the rhythm, the articulation and the mambos typical of the genre, without neglecting the technique you need for any style.
No. You can start from scratch; the teacher introduces bass clef reading little by little, along with the instrument. If you want to work on reading and harmony separately, you can add music theory.
