What you'll learn in music theory lessons

  • Rhythmic and melodic reading in treble and bass clef.
  • Intervals, major and minor scales, and key signatures.
  • Building chords, harmonic functions and common progressions in popular and classical music.
  • Ear training: recognizing intervals and chords, and working through rhythmic and melodic dictations.
  • Analysis of songs and pieces, including how the bambuco is written and the classic debate over 3/4 versus 6/8.
  • First steps in composition and arranging, if that's your goal.

When can you start?

Any age

Music theory has no strict minimum age: with young children it's approached playfully within early music education or instrument lessons, and as a subject in its own right it usually works best from around age 9 or 10, when abstract thinking is more developed. This is a rough guide that depends on each child. Adults can start at any age, whether or not they have experience playing an instrument.

What you need to get started

  • A staff-paper notebook and a pencil.
  • Access to an instrument, ideally a keyboard, to hear and check what you're studying.
  • If your teacher suggests it, a music notation or ear-training app.
  • For online lessons: a stable connection and a device with a camera; a large screen helps when reading shared scores.

Why learn music theory

  • You learn repertoire more easily, because you understand its structure instead of memorizing it note by note.

  • You communicate better with other musicians when rehearsing, arranging or playing in a group.

  • Gives you concrete tools to improvise, compose and arrange.

  • Strengthens your ear, which shows in your intonation and in how you listen to music.

Questions about music theory lessons

Can I take sight-singing and ear-training lessons with a teacher?

Yes. Music theory lessons can cover rhythm reading, sight-singing, interval recognition and dictation. Tell us your level and what you find difficult so we can recommend a teacher and agree on a focus. Between lessons, use our free ear-training tool; if you are preparing for an entrance exam, see our music entrance preparation lessons.

Do I need to play an instrument to study music theory?

It's not required, but it helps a lot: theory makes sense when you hear it and play it. If you don't play one, a simple keyboard is enough to check scales and chords. Many students combine theory with piano lessons or another instrument.

Is music theory boring?

It depends on how it's taught. Lessons start from the music you're into, songs you know, ear exercises and applications on your instrument, so every concept has a purpose. Your teacher tailors the approach to your goal.

What's the difference between theory, harmony and sight-singing?

Theory is the overall framework: notes, rhythms, scales, intervals and chords. Sight-singing (solfège) focuses on reading and singing a score or tapping out its rhythms, and harmony studies how chords combine and move from one to another. In lessons they're worked on together, according to your level.

Will it help if I want to study music professionally?

Yes: theory, sight-singing and ear training are the foundation that music training programs usually require. Tell your teacher what your goal is and how much time you have, so they can put together a plan to match. How long you need to prepare depends on your starting point.

Which areas of Bogotá do the teachers cover?

We give in-home lessons in and around Bogotá. Coverage depends on the neighborhood and each teacher’s availability, so send us your approximate address and we’ll confirm.

Can I take lessons from another city or from outside the country?

Yes, through live online lessons by video call, from any city in Colombia or abroad, with the same weekly follow-up. See how online music lessons work.

How much do lessons cost?

Each lesson lasts 90 minutes. With the monthly plan of 4 classes, each lesson costs less than a single class. See your rate on our pricing page.

Would you rather we message you?

Leave your name and WhatsApp number. We'll message you to understand what you're looking for and recommend teachers and times. No commitment.
