Tiple lessons in Bogotá, at home and online

The tiple is one of Colombia's most representative instruments and a distinctive voice of Andean music. Its 12 metal strings, grouped into four courses of three, give it a bright sound rich in overtones. Learn to accompany bambucos, pasillos, guabinas and torbellinos, or play picked melodies as a soloist. Lessons welcome both guitar players and complete beginners.

What you'll learn in tiple lessons

  • Posture, tuning the tiple and handling its courses of strings.
  • Basic chords and strumming patterns for accompaniment.
  • Colombian Andean rhythms: bambuco, pasillo, guabina, torbellino and danza.
  • Melodic tiple: picking out melodies and playing solo arrangements.
  • Accompanying singers and playing in traditional formats such as the Andean trio, alongside bandola and guitar.
  • Reading chord symbols and sheet music, applied to Colombian repertoire.

When can you start?

From age 8

As a rough guide, children usually start the tiple around age 8, because its courses of metal strings take more finger strength than a nylon-string guitar. For younger children, acoustic guitar with nylon strings or early music education pave the way very well; it depends on each child, and the teacher assesses each case. Adults can start at any age, and those who already play guitar find the switch natural, because the tiple is tuned like the first four strings of the guitar.

What you need to get started

  • A tiple in good condition and properly set up; if it's secondhand or a hand-me-down, ask the teacher to check it.
  • A chromatic tuner (a tuner app works too), very useful for strings tuned an octave apart.
  • Spare strings, because the thinnest ones can snap while you tune.
  • For online lessons: a stable connection and a camera that shows both hands from the front.

Why learn tiple

  • Connects you with the repertoire and tradition of Colombian Andean music.

  • Its bright, harmonically rich sound fills the room even when you play alone.

  • If you already play guitar, it expands your rhythm and accompaniment toolkit with a new instrument.

  • Opens the door to trios, estudiantinas (plucked-string ensembles) and traditional music groups alongside the Andean bandola.

Questions about tiple lessons

Is the tiple hard if I already play guitar?

You're already ahead, because it shares the tuning of the guitar's first four strings and many chord shapes are similar. What's new is the pressure the grouped strings demand, the right hand and the Andean rhythms. With a teacher, that transition becomes much clearer.

What's the difference between the tiple and the guitar?

The tiple has 12 metal strings grouped in four courses of three, a smaller body and a brighter sound. The guitar has six single strings and a lower range. In Andean music they often play together: the guitar provides the bass lines and the tiple the harmonic and rhythmic bed.

Is the tiple only for traditional music?

That's its most natural repertoire, but not the only one. Today the tiple also shows up in popular music, fusions and contemporary arrangements, and it can accompany songs from other genres. Your teacher tailors the repertoire to your interests without losing the Andean rhythmic foundation.

Can you take tiple lessons online?

Yes. The tiple works well over video call if the camera shows both hands and the lighting is good. Tuning it calmly before each lesson saves time, since there are 12 strings and the ones tuned in octaves need attention.

Which areas of Bogotá do the teachers cover?

We give in-home lessons in and around Bogotá. Coverage depends on the neighborhood and each teacher’s availability, so send us your approximate address and we’ll confirm.

Can I take lessons from another city or from outside the country?

Yes, through live online lessons by video call, from any city in Colombia or abroad, with the same weekly follow-up. See how online music lessons work.

How much do lessons cost?
