When can you start?

From age 7

As a rough guide, many children can start electric guitar around age 7 or 8, on a short-scale or 3/4-size instrument. Its strings are thinner and softer than an acoustic's, which makes fretting notes easier, although the instrument's weight and managing the volume call for adult support. Every child is different and the teacher assesses each case. Adults can start at any age, even if they've never played any other guitar.

What you need to get started

  • An electric guitar and an instrument cable.
  • A small practice amp, or an audio interface or processor with headphones.
  • A tuner, picks and a strap.
  • For online lessons: a stable connection, a camera that shows both hands and, ideally, an audio interface so your teacher can hear your guitar clearly.

Why learn electric guitar

  • Lets you play in a band early on, which is very motivating.

  • Develops rhythmic precision and fine control in both hands.

  • Sparks creativity through improvisation and the search for your own sound.

  • What you learn carries over to the acoustic guitar and the electric bass.

Questions about electric guitar lessons

Should I start on acoustic guitar before electric?

It's not necessary. If the music that motivates you is rock, blues or metal, starting straight on electric is a perfectly valid option. Both share chords and scales, so what you learn on one will help you on the other.

What gear do I need to get started?

With the guitar, a cable, a small practice amp and a tuner, you're ready to go. There's no need to invest in pedals at first, because many practice amps come with basic effects. Ask your teacher before buying so your gear suits the music you want to play.

Can you learn electric guitar in online lessons?

Yes. For your teacher to hear your sound well, it's best to connect the guitar to an audio interface or an amp with USB output, instead of relying only on the computer's microphone. With a well-placed camera, they can correct your technique and posture in real time.

Can I practice without bothering the neighbors?

Yes, the electric guitar is one of the easiest instruments to practice quietly: just plug headphones into the amp or a processor. That way you can practice at any hour without volume problems. In how to practice music at home you'll find ideas for organizing those sessions.

Which areas of Bogotá do the teachers cover?

We give in-home lessons in and around Bogotá. Coverage depends on the neighborhood and each teacher’s availability, so send us your approximate address and we’ll confirm.

Can I take lessons from another city or from outside the country?

Yes, through live online lessons by video call, from any city in Colombia or abroad, with the same weekly follow-up. See how online music lessons work.

How much do lessons cost?

Each lesson lasts 90 minutes. With the monthly plan of 4 classes, each lesson costs less than a single class. See your rate on our pricing page.
