When can you start?
From age 8
As a rough guide, many children start clarinet at 8 or 9, when they already have their permanent front teeth (the embouchure rests on them), hands that can cover the holes and enough air. Some start earlier on smaller clarinets in C or E♭, or prepare with the recorder. Every child is different, which is why the teacher assesses each case. Adults can start at any age.
What you need to get started
- A B♭ clarinet in good condition; your teacher can help you check a used one before you buy it.
- A mouthpiece, a ligature and several soft reeds to start with, because they wear out with use.
- A cloth or swab to dry the inside after playing, and a music stand.
- For online lessons: a stable connection and a device with a camera that shows your embouchure from the front.

Questions about clarinet lessons
What reed strength should I use when I'm starting out?
You usually start with soft reeds, which respond with little effort and help you build your embouchure without biting the mouthpiece. As your air and lips get stronger, your teacher will suggest moving up in strength. Always keep several reeds in rotation, because each one sounds different.
Why does my clarinet squeak when I'm starting out?
Squeaks usually come from too much or too little lip pressure, a worn-out reed or fingers that don't fully cover the holes. It's very normal at the start and gets fixed with long tones and attention to position. In lessons, the teacher pinpoints the specific cause in your case.
Can I switch from clarinet to saxophone later on?
Yes, it's a very common move. They share the single reed and several fingerings, although the saxophone embouchure is more relaxed and its register works differently. If jazz or popular music appeals to you, check out saxophone lessons.
Do clarinet lessons work online?
They work well for reading, articulation, repertoire and weekly follow-up, as long as the camera shows your embouchure and hands. To correct fine details of posture, many students prefer lessons at home in Bogotá and nearby areas. Either way, what matters most is practice between lessons; we share some ideas in how to practice music at home.
