The trumpet has only three valves, yet they work with your lips to produce its full range of notes. The key is the lips' vibration inside the mouthpiece, known as buzzing. The trumpet features in salsa, jazz, symphony orchestras, town bands and the porros of Colombian bandas pelayeras, offering a huge range of repertoire. Lessons patiently build embouchure and breath control so you can produce a good sound without strain.

I'm Felipe, the teacher who insists on breathing well before playing… and before panicking over a difficult note. 😅 My lessons bring technique, good energy and the certainty that making mistakes is part of making music. 🎶✨
From age 8
As a guideline, many children start trumpet around age 8 or 9, once they have their permanent front teeth and the strength to hold the instrument with good posture. Some start on cornets or lighter trumpets, which take less effort to hold. What matters isn't just age but interest and the maturity to practice little by little without straining the lips; every child has their own moment. Adults can start at any age.
It's a very social instrument: there's room for trumpeters in bands, salsa orchestras, jazz groups and small-town brass bands.
With only three valves, the focus is on your ear: you learn to hear the note in your head before you play it.
Builds endurance and very fine control of the lips and facial muscles.
Its bright sound gives it a starring role in melodies, fanfares and solos.

Yes, it's normal for your lips to feel tired at first, like any muscle that's just starting to train. That's why early practice sessions are short, with frequent breaks. If there's sharp pain or marks that don't go away, it's usually a sign you're pressing the mouthpiece too hard, something your teacher will help you correct.
Both are brass instruments with a similar embouchure, but the trumpet uses valves and has a high, bright range, while the trombone uses a slide and sounds lower and fuller. If you like carrying the melody, the trumpet tends to win people over; if you prefer a warm, deep sound, go for the trombone. The best thing is to listen to both and let your ear decide.
It depends on each person and how they practice: the upper register is built with air, endurance and embouchure, not force. Trying to get there fast by pressing the mouthpiece usually leads to bad habits. There are no shortcuts, but there is an orderly path that your teacher adapts to your pace.
Yes, with a few precautions: reasonable hours, a practice mute and part of your practice spent buzzing on the mouthpiece alone, which is much quieter. Your teacher helps you put together a realistic routine for your space. You'll find more ideas in how to practice music at home.
