Double bass lessons in Bogotá, at home and online

The double bass is the lowest-pitched bowed string instrument and the foundation of many ensembles. Played with a bow, it supports orchestral harmony; plucked in pizzicato, it marks the beat in jazz, bolero and salsa. You play standing or on a tall stool, and its tuning in fourths (E, A, D, G) matches the electric bass. Learning it means listening to the whole group and providing rhythmic stability.

What you'll learn in double bass lessons

  • Posture standing or on a high stool, and balancing the instrument so it doesn't depend on hand strength.
  • Pizzicato with the side of the fingers for a deep, round sound that projects well.
  • Bowing technique, French or German depending on the school, for orchestral and chamber repertoire.
  • Left hand: fingering in the first positions, shifting and playing in tune without frets.
  • Reading bass clef and building bass lines from chords and chord symbols.
  • Walking bass and tumbao: the language of the double bass in jazz and Latin music.

When can you start?

From age 10

As a guideline, children usually start double bass around age 10 or older, when they're tall enough and have the hand strength to press down thick strings. There are 1/4 and 1/2 size basses that let them start earlier, especially children who are tall for their age. Some come to the double bass from electric bass or cello. It depends on each child, and adults can start at any age.

What you need to get started

  • A double bass of the right size (most adults use a 3/4) with strings in good condition.
  • A French or German bow and rosin made specifically for double bass, which is stickier than violin rosin.
  • A high bench or stool, a tuner and a music stand.
  • For online lessons: a stable connection, a camera set far enough back to show the whole instrument and, ideally, headphones that reproduce low frequencies well.

Why learn double bass

  • Develops a rock-solid sense of pulse, because the group relies on your line.

  • It teaches you harmony through practice: to walk a bass line, you need to understand the chords.

  • It opens doors in many styles: orchestra, jazz, bolero, salsa, chamber music and fusion.

  • Feeling the vibration of its long strings through your whole body makes playing it a very physical and rewarding experience.

Questions about double bass lessons

Can I switch from electric bass to double bass?

Yes, and you'll have a head start: the tuning is the same and you already know the bass's role in a group. What's new will be the posture, the left hand on a fretless fingerboard, a weightier pizzicato and, if you're interested, the bow.

Do I need to learn to play with the bow?

It depends on your goals. For jazz and popular music, pizzicato is the main thing; for orchestra or classical repertoire, the bow is essential. Even so, doing some bow work helps a lot with intonation and tone, which is why teachers usually include it.

What are lessons at home like with such a big instrument?

They're a big advantage: the teacher comes to your home in and around Bogotá, so you don't have to haul the double bass anywhere. You just need a clear space, a suitable stool or chair and good light. If you prefer online lessons, place the camera far back so the whole instrument is in view.

Is the double bass very demanding on the hands?

It takes strength and stamina, especially at first, because the strings are thick and the distances are large. That's why you work with good technique, letting the weight of your arm do part of the work, and with practice sessions that get longer gradually. If you feel any discomfort, tell your teacher so they can adjust your posture or the height of the instrument.

Which areas of Bogotá do the teachers cover?

We give in-home lessons in and around Bogotá. Coverage depends on the neighborhood and each teacher’s availability, so send us your approximate address and we’ll confirm.
