Drum lessons for kids in Bogotá and online

Many kids can start drums around age 6 or 7, when they can reach the pedals while sitting on a low stool. Before that, hand percussion and rhythm games lay the groundwork. A percussion and drums teacher comes to your home in Bogotá and the surrounding area, or teaches by video call.

What lessons for kids are like

  • Hand percussion before the drum kit

From age 5, children can explore small percussion instruments such as drums, maracas, claves or cajón. They learn to keep the beat and enjoy rhythm without needing to reach the pedals.

  • Practice pad first, drums later

A practice pad and a pair of drumsticks are enough to start, letting your child work on hand technique almost silently. Once your child is committed, add an electronic or acoustic drum kit. Junior kits have smaller drums and a lower stool.

  • A stool and pedals that fit

With a full-size drum kit, the teacher adjusts the stool height and brings the pedals and cymbals closer so your child's thighs are nearly horizontal and their feet reach without stretching.

  • Hearing and noise

With acoustic drums, hearing protection starts with the first lesson. With electronic drums, headphones are kept at a moderate volume. Bass drum hits travel through the floor, so a thick rug and practice times agreed on with the neighbors help.

Your first month, lesson by lesson

  1. Lesson 1: keeping the beat with claps and steps, and trying the practice pad. The teacher adjusts the stool and checks hearing protection.
  2. Lesson 2: hold the drumsticks without squeezing, so they can bounce off the drumhead.
  3. Lesson 3: alternating strokes and counting out loud, 1, 2, 3, 4.
  4. Lesson 4: a first beat, with bass drum on beats 1 and 3, snare on 2 and 4, and a steady hi-hat, played along with a slow song.

What to expect to learn

  • Keeping the beat with the body and handheld instruments.
  • Hold the drumsticks without squeezing and let them bounce.
  • Alternating strokes and first rudiments on the practice pad.
  • Count out loud while playing.
  • A first rock and pop beat played along with slow songs.

Tips for parents

  • Talk to the neighbors before the drum kit arrives, check your residential complex's rules and agree on practice times. Avoid quiet hours.

  • Get hearing protection from the start: filtered musicians' earplugs or children's earmuffs. If your child complains of ringing in their ears, lower the volume and consult a pediatrician if it persists.

  • Ten minutes a day on the practice pad with the metronome at a slow tempo is more effective than an hour on the weekend. Let your child finish by playing along with their favorite song.

Frequently asked questions

Does my child need a full drum kit from day one?

No. A practice pad and drumsticks are enough to start. For in-home lessons on a drum kit, the teacher can't bring one along, so it's worth having one at home once your child is committed. Find a buying guide in how to choose a drum kit or cajón to get started.

How can my child practice in an apartment without disturbing others?

Use a practice pad for daily technique, an electronic drum kit with headphones, a thick rug under the bass drum and practice times agreed on with the neighbors. For acoustic drums, mutes and rods or brushes help.

Do online drum lessons work for kids?

Yes, especially for technique, coordination and reading music with a practice pad or electronic drum kit. An adult should help with the camera during the first lessons so hands and feet are visible. With acoustic drums, move the device farther away to keep the microphone from distorting. See online music lessons.

Can my child start with cajón instead of drums?

Yes. The cajón is portable and quieter, and it helps a lot with rhythm, though it develops a different technique from drumming. Your child can start there and move to a drum kit once they can reach the pedals.
