Guitar lessons for kids in Bogotá and online

Guitar works very well as a first instrument from age 6 or 7, with two conditions: it must fit the child and have nylon strings. That makes it gentler on the fingers and gets them playing songs sooner. A guitar teacher comes to your home in Bogotá and the surrounding area, or teaches by video call.

What lessons for kids are like

  • A guitar that fits

At 6 or 7, a 1/2- or 3/4-size guitar is usually right. Larger sizes generally come around age 11 or 12. When your child is seated, the guitar should not cover their face or make them hunch over. If they're between sizes, choose the smaller one.

  • Nylon strings and gentle finger care

Nylon strings are gentler on fingertips. Mild discomfort in the first few weeks is normal; severe pain isn't. That's why sessions are short, with breaks, and the teacher checks that the strings aren't too high.

  • Songs from the first month

Start with melodies on one or two strings, then simplified one- or two-finger chords, followed by two-chord songs. The teacher can simplify a song your child suggests.

  • Playing and singing together

Your child strums while you sing, or the other way around. It's the most fun way to practice chord changes, and it barely feels like studying.

Your first month, lesson by lesson

  1. Lesson 1: the teacher checks the guitar's size and string height, then teaches seated posture and the parts of the guitar.
  2. Lesson 2: tuning with help and playing a familiar melody on one or two strings.
  3. Lesson 3: a first simplified chord and downward strumming with the thumb.
  4. Lesson 4: a two-chord song to play and sing along to, plus a short practice routine.

What to expect to learn

  • Sit properly with the guitar and position both hands.
  • Simple melodies on one or two strings.
  • First chords, starting with simplified versions and then full shapes.
  • Simple down-and-up strumming patterns.
  • Playing guitar to accompany songs your child sings.

Tips for parents

  • Tune it yourself at first using the guitar tuner. A child cannot tune it alone during the first few months.

  • Keep the guitar in sight, on a stand or hanging on the wall. A guitar in its case in the closet rarely gets played. Keep the left-hand fingernails short.

  • If your child complains of severe pain in their fingers, wrist or forearm, stop and tell the teacher. Otherwise, 10 to 15 minutes most days is enough.

Frequently asked questions

Will my child's fingers hurt?

It's normal for fingertips to feel tender during the first few weeks as small calluses form. Nylon strings, a guitar with low string action, and short sessions help a lot. Severe pain or pain that continues the next day isn't normal: let the teacher know.

What guitar should I buy for a 6- or 7-year-old?

A 1/2- or 3/4-size classical guitar with nylon strings. Avoid toy guitars with metal strings, which are hard to tune and tough on fingers. Ask the teacher before buying. Read more in guitar for kids: a parent's guide.

Do online guitar lessons work for kids?

Yes. An adult should help set up the camera for the first few lessons so the teacher can see both hands and your child's posture. Once your child gets used to it, the teacher gives real-time feedback and specific practice tasks. Learn more about online music lessons.

Can my child learn electric guitar instead of acoustic guitar?

A nylon-string guitar that fits your child is a good choice to start with. The foundation they build will help if they later want to switch to steel strings or electric guitar.
