Guitar lessons for adults in Bogotá and online

Many adults have wanted to learn guitar for years. These lessons get straight to what you want: chords and strumming to start playing songs soon, while caring for your fingers and following a plan that fits your week. You start with your song list, not isolated exercises. Before you begin, read learning guitar as an adult.

What adult lessons are like

  • Start with your songs

Your teacher asks for a list of songs you want to play and chooses a starting point based on their chords. With a few open chords and a simple strumming pattern, you can already accompany basic songs. That keeps motivation up, which adults often struggle with most. See easy guitar songs.

  • Sore fingers at the start

Your fingertips will feel sore during the first few weeks as calluses form. You'll learn to press with just enough pressure, practice in short sessions, and check whether your guitar's strings are too high. Pain in your wrist, elbow, or joints isn't normal: stop and address the cause. Read more in finger pain when playing guitar.

  • Chord changes and barre chords, with patience

An adult brain quickly understands how a chord is built, but the hand takes longer to change chords automatically. You practice changes without strumming, then add a simple strumming pattern, and finally the one from the recording. The F barre chord comes up early, starting with a simplified version.

  • Play with friends and accompany your singing

For many adults, the best part is playing at gatherings or with friends. You'll learn to keep a steady beat even when you make a mistake, change keys with a capo to make a song comfortable to sing, and accompany your own voice. Tune up quickly with the tuner.

Your first month, lesson by lesson

  1. Lesson 1: a conversation about your songs and your guitar. Posture, tuning and your first open chords, such as E minor and A minor.
  2. Lesson 2: more chords, slow changes between them and a basic strumming pattern with a steady beat. Finger care and a 15-minute routine.
  3. Lesson 3: your first progression from a song you chose, with three or four chords, changing without stopping even if they don't sound clean yet.
  4. Lesson 4: the complete song from beginning to end and an introduction to a simplified barre chord.

What to expect to learn

  • Posture, tuning and care for your fingertips and hands.
  • Open chords and increasingly smooth changes.
  • Strumming patterns for your songs, from ballads to bambuco.
  • Barre chords and using a capo to adjust the key.
  • Keep a steady beat and play with others, or accompany your own singing.

Practice tips when time is short

  • Practice for 15 minutes most days, or in two 10-minute sessions. Several short sessions hurt less and build calluses better than one long session.

  • Keep your guitar in sight and in tune. If you have to take it out of its case, it's more likely to stay put.

  • When you can't play, practice strumming with muted strings or sing the melody. If a week gets hectic, scale back your goal but keep the habit going.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take guitar lessons from another city or country?

Yes. Online lessons are live, in Spanish, and guitar works very well in this format. Position the camera so both hands and the neck are visible, and use headphones to hear the teacher clearly. It's very practical if you have a busy schedule.

Is it too late to learn guitar at 50 or 60?

No. What changes is the approach: short sessions, comfortable strings and songs that motivate you. Many people start at those ages and enjoy playing at family gatherings or just for themselves. Read more in is it too late to learn music at 30, 40 or 50.

How long until my fingers stop hurting?

It depends on how much you practice and the strings. With short practice sessions almost every day, fingertip discomfort usually eases in about a month. If you have pain in your joints, wrist or tendons, or feel tingling, stop and seek advice.

Do I need to read music to play guitar?

Not to get started. You can learn many songs using chord symbols and tablature. Reading sheet music helps if you're interested in classical guitar or want to understand what you play better. Look up the chords you're learning in our chord guide.
